Roky Erickson - The Evil One
I don't know much about psychedelic music - most of what I've heard sounds fairly dull. But from the opening chords of this album, it just straight up rocks.
Roky has an ability with the guitar, and a whacked-out sensibility that is just infectious. On "The Creature with the Atom Brain," he repeats a good portion of the dialogue of the movie of the same name (a Z-movie triumph in it's own right, I've since discovered).
Check this guy out.
(In related news, there's a documentary movie about Roky premiering tomorrow in NYC, and showing soonishly across the country).
1 - Two Headed Dog [Red Temple Prayer]
2 - I Think of Demons
3 - Creature with the Atom Brain
4 - The Wind and More
5 - Don't Shake Me Lucifer
6 - Bloody Hammer
7 - Stand for the Fire Demon
8 - Click Your Fingers Applauding the Play
9 - If You Have Ghosts
10 - I Walked with a Zombie
11 - Night of the Vampire
12 - It's a Cold Night for Alligators
13 - Mine Mine Mind
14 - Sputnik

Lee "Scratch" Perry On the Wire
Lee Perry is one of my favorite vocalists (in addition to his widely-appreciated talents as a producer, e.g. "downpresser" from a few weeks ago, all of the best-produced Bob Marley tracks, etc.) For those of you who don't know the legends, this is very free-associative stuff, deeply intwined in his own personal pantheon and self-mythologizing. In my opinion, this album expresses this moment of Lee's development the best. It's mostly self-produced, with a couple of uncredited productions by Adrian Sherwood ("On the Wire" & "The Grim Reaper"). It's also got some great remakes of the classic Marley tracks "Exodus" and "Keep on Moving."
01. Lee "Scratch" Perry On The Wire
02. Exodus
03. For Whom The Bell Tolls
04. The Grim Reaper
05. Yes My Friends
06. Rock My Soul - one of the funnest spring-is-coming-feeling songs I know!
07. Seaside (Mystic Mirror)
08. I Am The Upsetter
09. Keep On Moving
10. Burn Funky

Bonde Do Role - Gasolina
The new(ish) single for Bonde Do Role's Gasolina (out on Mad Decent) is pretty great. Buraka Som Sistema has remixed Gasolina to great effect - their added vocals are stompin' (I think I like them better than the originals).
Download: Bonde do Role - Gasolina (Buraka Som Sistema vox remix)
The Radioclit remix is also excellent - but it's been posted elsewhere in my circle of sites, so I won't reduplicate.

Ratatat Remixes
Looks like Ratatat are getting ready to release a new remix album. Hooray! I honestly didn't think we would see this - I don't think they made any money off the first one, and now they've got a legit album career. But I guess they'll get clearance and make money off this one...
Here's a sample track they're offering:
Z-ro, Devin the Dude & Juvenile - The Mule (Ratatat remix)

Frank Black - Christmass
Frank Black's latest album, Christmass, is not really a Christmas album in any way that I can figure. But it's good. A bunch of live material and stuff recorded in hotel rooms while on tour, it's perhaps a bit more for the avid fan, but there are a lot of great tracks. Maybe it's on itunes (I don't know, that program fucks up my computer). I've ripped a couple of my favorite tracks for you. (buy it) (here's a track-by-track breakdown by the recording engineer)
1.Do What You Want Gyaneshwar

3.Wave of Mutilation
5.Living on Soul

3:2
Usually, I get put off by how much Wayne Marshall wallows in the academic stylings of his own prose. But this exegisis of the 3:2 rhythm is cool. I particularly like the fruityloops drum patterns.

I got these turned up so loud
First of all, the song that gives this post its title.
Download: Frank Black - i need peace
I'm seriously considering beginning every post with a Frank Black tune. He's my 100% favorite.
Now, here's what I've got turned up so loud this week:
Download: Buraka som sistema - From Buraka to the World EP
Seems like folks can't stop talking about this group and their breakout tune "Yah!" The style of music is Kuduro, imported from Angola to Portugal. Their MySpace.
As with any musical types, it has changed somewhat in the migration to the colonial center; in this case, picking up a darker hint of dubstep and grime. To compare, here's an mixtape from Angola:

Video Game Music: Rob Hubbard
Beginning at the beginning. No discussion of video game music (of of electronic music generally), can bypass Rob Hubbard, a true giant in the field. As a music programmer for the Commodore 64, he was one of the first to see the musical potentials of game music.
Here is one of his classic tunes:
Crazy Comets Theme (ripped from the excellent "Input 64" album put out by the Enduro label)
Check out the rest of Hubbards music at http://www.freenetpages.co.uk/hp/tcworh/index.htm (to listen, you'll need to download a small program to replicate the Commodore's SID chip)

EBN
One of the earliest, most innovative audio/video groups. EBN (Emergency Broadcast Network) was a group out of RISD who cut and pasted video when they still had to work with actual tape! And just look at the results -- I still haven't seen anything to top this video.
This is the "live" version (intercut with footage from their stage show), which I don't like quite as much as the straight video version (or you can watch that version, minus the great intro). Still awesome, though.
More EBN videos can be seen @ JoshuaLPearson.com EBN archive.

Bally Sagoo: Wham Bam 2
Download-link: http://rapidshare.com/files/6671876/Bally_Sagoo_-_Wham_Bam_2.rar.html
From the best of the best of my hindi remix mixtape collection.
Hindi remixes are also known as punjabi remixes, desi remixes, and bhangra (although this last one is sometimes confusing, because it also refers to a traditional punjabi syle of music).

ALL TOWERS OPEN FIRE
"ALL TOWERS OPEN FIRE"
music is the tool
make them tremble
shake them down
rip 'em a new one
all towers open fire
This is
LIVE RECORD
just a little note about
the Big Five so-called "music" companies --
Universal Music Group
Sony Music Entertainment
EMI Group
Warner Brothers Music
BMG Entertainment
it is beyond ironic that the PR departments of the big five record labels
hurl the epithets "thief" and "pirate" at music downloaders and accuse them
of cheating artists. Most downloaders love music and want to support the
artists and producers who make it -- can the same be said for the Boards of
the Big Five? Who are the real theives, pirates and cheats?
all towers open fire
--------
This is a musical assult. Show no mercy.
The Big 5 record companies are fucked. Their strategy is to push fourty or so artists at any one time, and the rest be damnned. They get a lot of the good talent, sure, but do they develop it? Most of the artists who make it as lasting stars end up flat as pancakes.
The game is control, and the Big 5 have perfected it to a science. Control distribution, and you control sales. Control radio, and you control preferences. And to control the artists, you have to keep them tired. Stress them to the limit and play to their vices. Keep them on the road. Disconnect them in place and time, keep them on the run. Let the debt mount..."Back on tour, buddy, it's the only way to keep your house."
Does this produce the best music?
There is a war going on, and it is at a stalemate. The Big 5 and their old media allies, are fighting new media and digital technology for control of the future of music. Will content be expensive, and playback devices relegated to an associated role, or will content be relatively cheap, allowing for devices to be more expensive. There are mutually limiting factors -- and while there was a burst of discretionary spending on both sides in the late 90s, that balloon has deflated. The two sectors don't have a lot of room to maneuver. It's hard to sell iPods without free downloading.
There is a stalemate.
So there is a stalemate -- but surely it will be settled in the courts! Aren't there lawsuits pending, or, uh, something? Just think about it -- if there are these two juggernaut industries figthing over extremely large sums of money, with all their best lawyers on the case -- a single hearing could take a short age! If one folds, and their side stops showing up -- how long do you think it is going to take to make the case?
But neither side is stopping. And artists and listeners are stuck in the middle. And the music is mediocre and undeveloped.
The Big 5 killed internet radio...or did they?
We gotta get away from this techno-fetishism!

Ghostland Observatory vs Tony Matterhorn and Bounty Killer
Here's a remix I did, pitting Austin band Ghostland Observatory's "Silver City" aginst Tony Matterhorn's "Pour a Little Liquor" and Bounty Killer's "Four Season", both on the Bad Belly rhythm.

Musical Re-Education
The production and distribution of music is in incredible flux.
What can we learn from this?
Music is an important part of culture.
What part does culture play in revolution?
These and many more questions will probably not be answered in this blog.
